Nikki Simpson: Ephemeral, 2005

In her own words:

So much of who we are in essence is hidden, concealed from others, concealed sometimes even from ourselves. By connecting with what is hidden we come to discover the essence of who we are.

Through my work I seek to capture what lies beneath the surface, bringing in to the light what we mislay or miss as we progress along the paths of our lives.

Traversing my own path I ventured across the Greek term Aletheia. Coined by Martin Heidegger, Aletheia translates as an expression of unconcealment, as an uncovering of beings in their essence. As time has elapsed Aletheia has come to provide an umbrella, a point of reference under which, through which, I create.

Contained within this, Buddhist thinking and philosophy has offered insight and inspiration for me, underpinning much of the work I produce. 'With out my journey and without the spring I would have missed this dawn', the simplicity of a Haiku encapsulating and conveying so much of the nature of existence. Just as a static image of life in transition has the power to highlight acutely the impermanence of our own lives.

As mediums I utilise photography, prose, film and installation. As tools these provide a broad means to explore and express, giving voice to notions such as transience, time, impermanence and interconnection. Much of my current body of work is concerned with the natural world, its fleeting and ephemeral quality and the correlation of this with our own transient nature.

Through layering, manipulation and montage I seek to unearth the subtext of our everyday, and in doing so challenge perceived conceptions of concrete reality.
